Costs and Investment
One of the most important questions in any B2B e-commerce project concerns the investment. We understand that you need a reliable estimate before commissioning a project. The following questions give you a realistic framework for expected costs, both for initial development and ongoing operations. Detailed budget indications are provided in the free initial consultation.
- What does a typical B2B e-commerce project cost? Investment depends on project scope. A B2B shop with standard functionality and a straightforward ERP connection starts in the mid five-figure range. More complex projects with multiple system integrations, approval workflows and individualized catalogs fall into the six-figure range. During the initial consultation, we provide a realistic budget indication based on comparable projects.
- Are there hidden costs such as license fees? No. Shopware Community Edition is open source and incurs no license costs, regardless of the number of your customers, orders or products. Costs are transparently composed of development, hosting, maintenance and optional further development. All cost items are itemized in detail before the project begins, so you have full transparency over your investment.
- What ongoing costs arise after go-live? Ongoing costs consist of hosting, maintenance and optional further development. Hosting on German servers includes server infrastructure, SSL certificates and backup storage. Maintenance packages start with a base package including monthly security updates and monitoring. All costs are calculated transparently and discussed in detail before the project begins. Since Shopware Community Edition incurs no license fees, this frequently underestimated cost item is eliminated.
- Does XICTRON work with fixed prices or on a time-and-materials basis? We offer both models, depending on the project situation. For clearly defined projects with a stable requirements catalog, we work with fixed-price quotes. For projects with agile requirements or exploratory phases, we recommend time-and-materials billing based on hourly contingents. In practice, many clients combine both models: fixed price for the initial go-live and subsequent development on a time-and-materials basis.
- How is the return on investment of a B2B shop calculated? The ROI of a B2B shop results from several factors: reduction of manual order processing (typically 60 to 80 percent less effort per order (project experience)), increase in online ordering rate (often from under 10 to over 50 percent within twelve months (project experience)), reduction of error rates in order entry and relieving the inside sales team. In many cases, the investment pays for itself within 12 to 18 months (project experience). During the initial consultation, we can develop an ROI estimate tailored to your situation.
- Can the project be divided into sub-projects to distribute the investment? Yes, we frequently recommend a phased approach. Phase one covers the core shop with basic ERP integration and the most important product categories. Phase two expands with additional interfaces, self-service features and further sales channels. Phase three includes internationalization, advanced analytics and automation. This approach reduces project risk, enables early wins and distributes the investment over a longer period.
